Background
The Maya’s Dugong was originally built as a research vessel by the Canadian government in 1966, undertaking a variety of marine research expeditions. After decades of service in this capacity, it was eventually purchased privately and completely overhauled with more comfortable accommodation, for the specific purpose of duplicating Finnish explorer Nordenskiöld’s route from the Atlantic to the Pacific via northern Russia – braving the arctic conditions of the “Northern Passage”.
Following this expedition, the vessel was purchased and overhauled once again to serve in its current capacity as an oceanographic and expedition vessel throughout the Indian Ocean, under its new name, Maya’s Dugong.
