THE REPOWERING OF THE M.V. MAYA’S DUGONG

In June 2019, the M.V. Maya’s Dugong underwent a replacement of her engine. Initially she was powered by an engine that was considered top-of-the-line at the time when it was installed. As time went by it required a lot of maintenance and repairs. It only seemed as a natural decision to replace her old engine with a new and more efficient one that met her needs.
After extensive research, it was concluded that an engine from YANMAR in Japan was the best fit for the M.V. Maya’s Dugong. Based on power requirements and other factors it was decided that the YANMAR 6AYM-WET Heavy-Duty series of engines was the best fit for her.
This engine boasts a power rating of 555 bkW (755 HP) at 1840 rpm, together with a Yanmar gearbox Kanzaki YXH240L. The advantages of this engine were numerous such as better performance, higher fuel efficiency and higher reliability than her previous engine. This engine is a 4-stroke engine compared to the 2-stroke on the previous engine. It also features an emissions rating of IMO Tier II, which in effect translates to being much more environmentally friendly.
In conclusion, after the replacement of the engine, sea trials were conducted with multiple engineers and Captains aboard, all of whom were very pleased with the performance of this new engine. The undertaking of this project gave the M.V. Maya’s Dugong a new lease on life, and we can only expect great results from this new change.
